# How to assign open shifts to a new employee

## Use the magic wand to quickly reassign shifts when an employee leaves

### What are open shifts?

When an employee leaves, their upcoming shifts can either be transferred directly during the offboarding process, or they remain as *open shifts* — shifts without an assigned employee.

### Transfer shifts during offboarding

The easiest method is to transfer the shifts while you are offboarding the employee. During the offboarding process, you can select a new employee to take over all the shifts at once.

### Assign open shifts using the magic wand

If the employee has already been offboarded and the shifts are already open, use the magic wand:

1. Go to the schedule and find the employee you want to assign the shifts to.
2. Hover over the employee's name in the **sum column** (the left-most column showing total hours).
3. Click **Assign shifts** when it appears.
4. Click the open shifts the employee should take over — they are assigned immediately.

This way you avoid having to assign each shift individually.
